Kristen de Voogd is a twenty-three year old Bolivian American-Canadian painter.
Drawing upon her ethnic ancestry, she utilizes oils and acrylics on canvas to paint Indigenous Aymara cultural scenes such as festivals and folklore.
Most recently her pieces deal with introspection and reimagining how many ways an orca can be painted. Having achieved her Bachelors in Fine Arts in painting she now focuses on her practice and other side quests…
Behind the art…
Since 2015 Kristen has created artworks based on travels from Central and South America and even from memories or songs.
She has grown up traveling far and wide to see family friends and of course, family who are spread across the country. This has led her to experiencing textures and nature that she tries to incorporate in her paintings.
Even everyday environments around her spark new ideas with subtle or unusual colour palettes and patterns.
One piece, Sgaana Xaaydagaay, touches upon the North American Haida tribe’s belief of the Killer Whale people. Click ME for link to the story.
Much of Kristen’s current art begins with her passion for the indigenous identity of the Americas.
Other paintings and drawings relate to pop culture and the exploration of the species Orcinus Orca.
